What to Do When You Have a Cracked Tooth

Posted .

Nobody starts their day thinking, “You know, if I crack a tooth today, that’ll be just awesome.” Unfortunately, sometimes as you’re going about your day, that very event occurs. Although it is best to avoid this kind of injury altogether, sometimes life happens and you find yourself with a cracked tooth.

Here’s what to do if you find yourself with a cracked tooth. The first step is to rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the exposed area. This should be done as soon as possible. It is likely that your mouth will begin to swell. You should apply a cold compress to the face to help minimize swelling.

Prevention is always the best option, so it is an excellent idea to wear a mouth guard whenever you are engaging in recreational activities or contact sports. Additionally, if you avoid chewing ice, hard candies, and popcorn kernels, you are far less likely to crack a tooth. The last recommendation is to use proper cutting tools such as scissors or a knife when you need to cut something. We’ve all seen someone use their teeth to cut a piece of duct tape off the roll. Use scissors for those kinds of jobs. Your teeth have the primary job of chewing your food – not cutting adhesive tapes or opening plastic bags.
