When a tooth does not have enough structure to support a dental filling, but it is not badly damaged enough to need a dental crown, our doctor may recommend dental inlays and onlays. Dental inlays are like dental fillings, except the whole work is in the cusps or bumps of the chewing surface of the tooth. Dental onlays are more extensive and are sometimes called partial crowns. Dental onlays cover one or more cusps of the chewing surface of the tooth.
Our dentists will remove tooth decay or any old dental filling and then take an impression of the tooth and those around it. The impressions are used to custom make your dental inlay or onlay. When the dental restoration is complete, our dentists will place your dental inlay or onlay in your mouth to check the fit. Any needed adjustments will be made. Once the ideal fit is reached, your inlay or onlay will be permanently cemented in place. Your dental inlay or onlay will last up to 30 years, much longer than a traditional filling.
