Gum disease, which is also known as gingivitis, is an infection that attacks the gums and bones that surround and support your teeth. It is caused by the buildup of plaque on your teeth, above and below the gum line. If left untreated, gum disease can cause the loss of permanent teeth. This disease is usually painless, so you may not know that you have it. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, our doctor can treat you:
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Red, swollen, or tender gums
- Bad breath or a bad taste that is persistent
- Receding gums
- Formation of pockets between your teeth and gums
- Permanent teeth that are lose or shifting
- Changes in your bite
If you have gingivitis, our dentists may recommend extra teeth cleaning appointments. Our hygienist will remove all of the plaque and tartar from your teeth. If this is not enough, our dentists may recommend a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. Your teeth will be cleaned of plaque and tartar, all the way down to the roots. Your roots will be smoothed to make it difficult for plaque to adhere to them.
